How To Decorate a Light Switch Plate Cover - DIY Tutorial !

DIY Light Switch Plate Cover

Materials

Collect all of your materials before beginning. You will need:
  • scissors
  • a picture/paper
  • light switch plate cover
  • mod podge and a container for mod podge
  • paint brush
  • x-acto blade
  • glitter or lace or anything else you might want to add.
Mod podge can be purchased at Hobby Lobby or another hobby store. Light switch plate covers are very inexpensive at Walmart. For the picture or paper, I usually get card stock from a hobby store but you can also use: a picture from a calender, a magazine, newspaper, old music sheets, encyclopedia pages, etc. For the mod podge containers I buy paper cups from the dollar store.

Set up

Cut your paper/picture so that it overlaps about 1/2" on all four sides. Pour a small amount of mod podge into your container.

Glue

Use your paint brush to brush mod podge onto the entire front of the light switch plate cover. Try to paint it on smoothly.
Then, place your picture/paper carefully onto the light switch plate cover. Use your finger to smooth the paper/picture, you don't want to leave bumps.
Brush mod podge on the edges and fold them over to the back of the light switch plate cover. You might have to cut off the corners so that it will fold over nicely.
When that dries, brush mod podge over the front of the light switch plate cover. This will seal it and add a nice gloss.
When everything is dry, use your x-acto blade to cut a "X" shape where the toggle is in the light switch plate cover. Fold those edges to the back of the light switch plate cover and use your mod podge to glue them down.
You can punch the screws through easily.

Optional

Add stickers, lace, or rhinestones.
Glitter can be easily added by mixing glitter with mod podge, then painting the mixture onto the light switch plate cover--or, there are also spray paint types of glitter!!
I like to also spray on a clear acrylic sealer also. I feel like it adds even more of a gloss.

You can also make matching outlet plate covers the same way! Such an easy way to personalize a space and add some color.
